When you take the United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®) Step 3, your performance will be reported as a three-digit score on a scale from 1 to 300, with 150 considered passing. USMLE Step 3 scoring is complex because there are two components to the exam: the multiple-choice questions (MCQ) and computer-based case simulations (CCS). Each section is worth 100 points, for a total possible score of 200.

The MCQ portion of Step 3 is pass/fail. You must get a passing score of 60% or higher to move on to the CCS portion of the exam. The CCS cases are scored based on your performance in seven areas: patient management, data gathering, diagnosis, therapeutic management plan, communication skills, professionalism and systems-based practice.

Each area is worth up to 10 points for a total possible score of 70 points. To pass Step 3 CCS, you must get a minimum score of 63%. Your USMLE Step 3 score report will include your overall three-digit score as well as your scores for each individual section: MCQ and CCS.

It will also list whether you passed or failed each section. Your official USMLE transcript will be released four weeks after you take the exam.

How Do I Interpret My Usmle Step 3 Score Report

You’ve finally done it. You’ve completed USMLE Step 3 and can now add the final piece to your residency application. But before you do, you need to interpret your score report.

Here’s how: First, a little background on Step 3. The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 3 is taken by medical students in their fourth year of medical school as they prepare to enter residency training.

The exam assesses a physician’s ability to apply medical knowledge and understanding of biomedical sciences to the practice of medicine. Step 3 is divided into two parts: Tidbits(T/F) and Clinical Simulation (CS). Each part consists of 44 items, for a total of 88 items on the exam overall.

Each item is worth one point, for a possible total score of 88 points. The T/F section tests your knowledge of basic science concepts with 44 true/false questions covering eight major content areas: anatomy, biochemistry, embryology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology. The CS section tests your clinical skills with 44 multiple-choice questions that focus on common problems seen in outpatient primary care settings such as family medicine or internal medicine.

To pass Step 3, you must achieve a score of 188 or higher on each section (T/F and CS), for a combined passing score of 376 or higher out of the possible maximum score of 448 points overall. Your score report will show your performance in each content area as well as your overall passing status. So what do all these numbers mean?
